The Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You by Elaine N. Aron: Conversation Starters Since its original publication in 1996, Dr. Elaine Aron’s book The Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You has been translated into 18 languages and has helped millions of people around the world. Author Elaine Aron introduced the world to a very distinct personality trait. She claimed that it affects one out of five people in the world. She called this HSP or the Highly Sensitive Person. She described this person as highly sensitive because of his sensitive nervous system. This person is aware of his surroundings and these affect the person in an intensified level. This person’s key quality is his ability to ponder, explore and associate everything that surrounds him. Accorrding to Aron, this “sensitivity is anything but a flaw”. In The Highly Sensitive Person, she shifts the perspective on the stereotypes placed on HSPs and helps HSPs themselves to view their personality as an asset not a liability. Counseling and Human Development says that Aron’s book is the first to talk about this personality and help those who have it to “make the most of it.” The New Times says that The Highly Sensitive Person is “a valuable resource.” A Brief Look Inside: EVERY GOOD BOOK CONTAINS A WORLD FAR DEEPER than the surface of its pages. The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander: Conversation Starters When Barack Obama won the presidency in 2009, the world thought that America has finally won over racial discrimination. Legal scholar and civil rights lawyer Michelle Alexander however realizes that this is far from the truth. The New Jim Crow is an exposition of how America has created a caste system through the mass incarceration of blacks who are imprisoned through harsh drug laws. Just like the Jim Crow laws that rendered blacks second-class citizens in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, today’s incarcerated blacks are prevented by the criminal legal system from taking advantage of the their economic, political and social rights as American citizen. Published in 2010, the book was on The New York Times bestseller list for over a year. It is the 2011 NAACP Image Award for best nonfiction. Summary of The First 90 DaysInstaread
Summary of The First 90 Days by Michael D. Watkins | Includes Analysis Preview: The First 90 Days is a handbook for the executive in transition. It provides lessons and examples for the optimal way to successfully enter a new company, position, or role. Above all, making a strong transition in the first 90 days can be the difference between long-term success in that role and a spiral into failure that can haunt an executive’s reputation wherever he or she may go. The first 90 days are best when approached as a period of learning and analysis instead of action. For a new executive, early initiatives loom disproportionately large to new bosses, colleagues, and employees. As a result, leaders in transition should use this time to secure early wins, learn about what supports the status quo, and develop a clear idea, together with higher management and employees, of what success will look like in each person’s individual role… PLEASE NOTE: This is key takeaways and analysis of the book and NOT the original book. This is an Instaread Summary of 'The Big Fat Surprise' by Nina Teicholz. Below is a preview of the earlier sections of the summary: Introduction The author had the luxury of approaching the nutritional science field as an open-minded individual with no affiliation or funding from any institutions or persons with deeply entrenched views. The result is some alarming information about the ways that nutrition has been misinterpreted for decades. The supposed health hazards of saturated fats found in butter, eggs, and meat have not been substantiated by reliable science. Science supports the fact that the body is healthiest on a diet rich in fat. Chapter 1 Vilhjalmur Stefansson was an anthropologist who lived with the Canadian Arctic Inuit in 1906, eating almost nothing but meat for an entire year. He later wrote the controversial book, Not by Bread Alone, in which he explained that the Eskimos seemed to be the healthiest people he had ever encountered despite their sedentary lifestyles and diets almost void of vegetables and carbohydrates. In 1928, he and a co-worker began a drastic experiment together. They vowed to consume only meat and water for a year. At the end of the year, both men were said to be in perfect health. In the early 1960’s, doctor and professor of biochemistry, George Mann, took a team from Vanderbilt University to Kenya to study the Masai people who ate and drank nothing but meat, blood, and milk. Fat from animal sources was the source of 60 percent of their calories. The blood pressure and weight of these warriors was 50 percent lower than men of the same age in the United States. If American beliefs about animal fat were true, Mann should have seen an epidemic of heart disease among the Masai. However, he found little evidence of heart disease among them. For decades, the American Heart Association (AHA), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and other expert groups have recommended obtaining daily calories from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The public has been advised to minimize animal fats and eliminate red meat from their diets despite Mann’s findings and similar evidence from other studies. In the early 1900’s, Sir Robert McCarrison was the director of nutrition research for the British government in the Indian Medical Service. He wrote in detail about the fact that the Sikhs and the Hunzas of northern India did not suffer from cancer, appendicitis, or ulcers like the Western nations did. He also noted that their great health stood in stark contrast to other groups in the southern part of India who lived on mainly white rice and little dairy or meat. Anthropologist Ales Hrdlicka studied the Native Americans of the Southwest between 1898 and 1905. He observed that they ate mainly buffalo, were extremely healthy, and lived very long lives without suffering from malignant diseases. A detail of these early studies often buried, or overlooked, is that humans today eat the muscle of the animal, but this was not always the case. Early humans preferred the fat of the animal over its muscle meat. These viscera are higher in saturated fat. It is hard to even imagine eating this way when contemporary standards advise the public to do the opposite.
Summary of Alexander HamiltonInstaread
Summary of Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow | Includes Analysis Preview: Alexander Hamilton (2004) is a sprawling biography of one of the most important figures in American history. It is based on copious original research, especially into Hamilton’s early years. As a political theorist, a polemicist, and the first Treasury secretary, Hamilton dedicated his life, his intellect, and a seemingly limitless stream of words to the cause of unifying and strengthening the United States. He did perhaps more than any other one person to ensure the strength of the American union, even as his pride and hot-headedness kept him from the presidency and led to his early death. Hamilton claimed to have been born on the island of Nevis in the British West Indies, probably in 1755. Orphaned and illegitimate, Hamilton had perhaps the least advantageous childhood of all the founders. He apprenticed as a clerk with merchant trader Thomas Stevens, a man who may have been his biological father… PLEASE NOTE: This is summary and analysis of the book and NOT the original book. The Power of HabitRapid-Summary
The Power of Habit: A Summary - Why We Do What We Do In Life and In Business The Power of Habit is organized into three parts. Part one examines the source of individual habits, the neurology of habits, and methods of changing habits on a personal level. Part two examines the habits of successful companies and organizations and how leadership might conceptualize habit change at the institutional level. Part three investigates social habits, and in particular, the role they play in times of larger societal shifts. A central thesis that Duhigg returns to throughout the book is that habits are central to our lives as individuals, institutions and larger social groups. If we have a better understanding of the mechanics of habit formation, then we can exercise more agency in affecting positive change on all of those levels. The work draws on scholarship from neurological and behavioral science, corporate research, and hundreds of interviews. In addition, the author draws heavily on stories of people and events to provide anecdotal support and cogent examples of his theories of habit and habit change. Duhigg is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist for The New York Times where he writes on business topics. He has a background in History from Yale University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. In 2010, he won the Science in Society Journalism Award from the National Association for Science Writers. Charles Duhigg puts the power of behavior change in the hands of the reader. The curtain is pulled back on the origin, structure, and purpose of the habits that keep us, our companies, and our society functioning smoothly. Using examples from some of the most prodigious, profitable, and well-known institutions in the modern era, Duhigg explains our habits in an easy to digest and relatable format. How thoroughly we depend on our habits can be traced back to our evolution. Our habits are instincts that have evolved throughout time to dictate our relationships, our behaviors, and the way we do business. But understanding the nature of our habits is just the beginning. Once we know how our habits are built, we can work to modify them to our benefit. This behavioral empowerment is at the core of The Power of Habit . Fluent ForeverGabriel Wyner
The ultimate rapid language-learning guide! For those who’ve despaired of ever learning a foreign language, here, finally, is a book that will make the words stick. At thirty years old, Gabriel Wyner speaks six languages fluently. He didn’t learn them in school -- who does? -- rather, he learned them in the past few years, working on his own and practicing on the subway, using simple techniques and free online resources. In Fluent Forever Wyner reveals what he’s discovered. The greatest challenge to learning a foreign language is the challenge of memory; there are just too many words and too many rules. For every new word we learn, we seem to forget two old ones, and as a result, fluency can seem out of reach. Fluent Forever tackles this challenge head-on. With empathy for the language-challenged and abundant humor, Wyner deconstructs the learning process, revealing how to build a foreign language in your mind from the ground up. Starting with pronunciation, you’ll learn how to rewire your ears and turn foreign sounds into familiar sounds. You'll retrain your tongue to produce those sounds accurately, using tricks from opera singers and actors. Next, you'll begin to tackle words, and connect sounds and spellings to imagery, rather than translations, which will enable you to think in a foreign language . And with the help of sophisticated spaced-repetition techniques, you'll be able to memorize hundreds of words a month in minutes every day. Soon, you'll gain the ability to learn grammar and more difficult abstract words-- without the tedious drills and exercises of language classes and grammar books. This is brain hacking at its most exciting, taking what we know about neuroscience and linguistics and using it to create the most efficient and enjoyable way to learn a foreign language in the spare minutes of your day.

Atomic Habits | An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones | A Comprehensive Summary Hired as the performance director of professional cycling for England in 2003, Dave Brailsford had his work cut out for him. For the previous century, British cyclists performed terribly, winning only one gold medal and never winning the Tour de France. Brailsford had a plan to turn around British cycling. He called his strategy ‚ the aggregation of marginal gains . This involves deconstructing every aspect of riding a bike, and then consistently improving each aspect by 1%. Over time, these small changes compound into incredible performance outcomes. Brailsford implemented hundreds of small improvements, both obvious (e.g. equipping better bike seats) and non-obvious (finding the best pillow and mattress so the cyclists had optimal sleep). The results were extreme. British cyclists won 66 Olympic/Paralympic gold medals, 5 Tour de France races, and set numerous world records in the decade after Brailsford began. The image to the right shows the results of both improving and regressing by 1% every day. Over the course of a week the changes are small, but over the course of a year the changes are massive. Over a short period of time, the effects of compounding are barely noticeable. But over longer periods of time, compounding will generate very powerful outcomes. While many of us over-weight the importance of grand, singular moments, we also under-weight tiny changes, the 1% improvements, that occur day to day. The slow rate of change makes it difficult for us to see what transformation is underway. Habits are a double-edged sword and can accelerate either growth or deterioration. Success or failure in any area of your life is merely a lagging indicator of the quality of your daily habits. Here’s another way of thinking about enormity of compound interest on tiny 1% improvements – If you regress 1% a day for an entire year, it’s the equivalent of going from the height of a one story house (10 feet tall) to the height of a large apple (3 inches tall). Habits often behave the same way as melting ice- you see no new result until you break through a certain point. This means tangible results of a new habit are delayed early on. This effort isn’t wasted, it is stored (hence the term “latent”).
