Gardening Can Be MurderMarta McDowell
“This book is dangerous. A veritable cornucopia of crime fiction and gardening lore, it faces the reader with multiple temptations—books to seek out, plants to obtain, garden tours to book.” —Vicki Lane, author of the Elizabeth Goodweather Appalachian Mysteries “Belongs on the shelf of every Agatha Christie fan—and every gardener who enjoys a little mischief and mayhem.” ―Amy Stewart, author of Wicked Plants With their deadly plants, razor-sharp shears, shady corners, and ready-made burial sites, gardens make an ideal scene for the perfect murder. In Gardening Can Be Murder Marta McDowell, a writer and gardener with a near-encyclopedic knowledge of the genre, illuminates the many ways in which our greatest mystery writers, from Edgar Allen Poe to authors on today’s bestseller lists, have found inspiration in the sinister side of gardens. From the cozy to the hardboiled, the literary to the pulp, and the classic to the contemporary, this book explores the mystery genre’s many surprising horticultural connections. Meet plant-obsessed detectives and spooky groundskeeper suspects, witness toxic teas served in foul play, and tour the gardens—both real and imagined—that have been the settings for fiction’s ghastliest misdeeds. McDowell also introduces us to today’s top writers who consider gardening integral to their craft, assuring that horticultural themes will remain a staple of the genre for countless twisting plots to come.

The Beginner’s Guide to Indoor and Miniature GardensDueep Jyot Singh & John Davidson
The Beginner’s Guide to Indoor and Miniature Gardens Understanding Indoor Gardens, Moss Gardens, Miniature Gardens and Gardens in a Bottle Table of Contents Introduction Necessary Tools for Bottle Gardening Best Plants for Bottle Gardening. Small Plant Gardens Pot et Fleur Making A Moss Garden Knowing More about Moss. Growing Plants from Pips Exotic gardening – Pineapple Tops Miniature Gardens Trees Other Popular Tiny Plants Taking Care of Your Miniature Garden Bulbs for Your Garden Selecting the Right Bulbs Planting Your Bulbs. Planting Hyacinth and Crocus Corms Bulb Fiber – Tips Newspaper Compost “Plunging” Bulbs. Growing Bulbs on Water. Methods of Water Cultivation. Bulb Failure Best Bulbs Choices Conclusion Author Bio Introduction The first time I saw a miniature garden growing in a bottle, my immediate response was “but how did the plants get into the bottle?” Naturally, this amused the gardener very much, and for those people who are not into the secret of how the plants got into the bottle, this feat can only be on par with how did a model ship get into the bottle! A garden in a bottle has about the same sort of fascination and requires almost that same amount offered dexterity and ingenuity to construct as a ship in the bottle. It is also going to need a lot of patience, because after all, you are gardening in limited space. But once your water garden is established, it can be left for months without attention. In many cases, depending on your plans, it may also not need watering. So for all those people who have been really fascinated with this conversation piece, when you see people surrounding a glass bottle with beautiful plants growing in it, here is the beginner’s guide to indoor gardening in a bottle. More than 200 years ago, a London physician named that Nathaniel Ward discovered that mosses, as well as ferns, which never grew satisfactorily in a city full of industrial fumes flourished if they were grown in the protection of a glass sided case. Thanks to his experiments, bottle Gardens developed in Europe, and since then, they have been the rage all over the world for people who are strapped for place, are looking for a new hobby, and also want to achieve something wonderful. You can use any large bottle. But the bottle has to be made of glass! Carboy glass bottles are normally made for brewing beer, so if you can get them cheap at a nursery nearby, please do so. A 5 gallon carboy bottle is going for around USD 48 on eBay USA, but as my gardening books always suggest, follow and advocate minimum of expense and minimum of fuss, you may want to spend some time asking around in your circle of friends and neighbors for large glass bottles, which is they can spare you. I have seen some of these bottles kept away in garages, because once upon a time, they were used and the owner does not have any use for them at the moment. He may not want them for another 20 years, either. Please do buy the bottles from your friends! Otherwise, a long-lasting friendship can get into jeopardy, when carelessly spoken words of half jesting “Well, he borrowed that bottle from me and what a mess he has made in it.” could cause subconscious rancor and ill will. That is of course if he is not interested in gardening! If he is a gardener, he is going to demand his bottle back – along with your bottle garden, - five years down the line! You may want to tell him the purpose for this gardening experiment. It is possible he may also want to give you some suggestions about plants based on his experience.

Karel Čapek's satiric gifts take a different turn in this impishly comic book, which recounts the trials, labors, joys, and meditations of the amateur gardener. Rather than a how-to book, Čapek's volume offers a lighthearted mock-treatise on the pains and rewards of tending a small and resistant garden plot. From January to December, the author and his brother, illustrator Josef Čapek, trace the vagaries of the amateur horticulturist's year, with brief side notes on seeds, the soil, plants, the beauties of autumn, and other aspects of gardening. How to Grow Cannabis at Home: A Guide to Indoor Medical Marijuana GrowingGlenn Panik
This book provides a step-by-step guide to successfully cultivating cannabis and an informative read about all aspects of this healthful plant. It is not a gardening tips book, but a guide to help you through each stage of a project that is not rocket science, but has it's pitfalls. Additionally, this ebook serves as a reference/guide to the overwhelming jargon you will run into if research the topic online, for example: What are HPS, CFL, and LED lighting? What is the significance of light cycles? Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Magnesium!? Which of the hundreds of seed types should I choose? Cannabis Sativa? Cannabis Indica? Cannabis Ruderalis!? Should I choose a "feminized" strain? An "autoflowering" strain? What is the best “medicinal” strain? Ahhh! Help!! This book is aimed at the inquisitive-minded grower. Understanding the various facets of the process becomes both an engaging learning experience and a method to improve your growing results. Written in 2012, the book reflects the current stand of seed strains, lighting technology, growing enclosures, fertilizers, etc. Throughout the text, there are informative side bars that clarify myth vs. fact about the home cultivation of marijuana. If you do any research online, you are likely to find conflicting information about growing cannabis; this book will help clarify these conundrums using factual information. Supplement your own research with this well composed and concise book written by a successful home cultivator.

This Life Is in Your HandsMelissa Coleman
The counterculture movement in late 1960s rural Maine conjures up images of an idyllic life living off the land. This element is present in Melissa Coleman’s memoir, but it is not the exclusive image to emerge from her evocative, atmospheric book. A literary memoir in the tradition of Dave Eggers and Tobias Wolff, Melissa Coleman recounts her childhood spent on the farm her parents purchased, built and tended with their own hands, hoping to create a utopia in which to raise their family in unison with nature. Tragedy and wonder weave through Coleman’s narrative, as she tells of relentless winters, unnerving isolation, and infidelity that rocks her parents’ marriage. Then one summer day when Melissa is seven, her three-year old sister wanders off and disappears into the black water of the irrigation pond built to sustain her family’s crops. Melissa is left to search for truth while tragedy threatens to tear her family apart; a quest that is both deeply human and heartbreaking.

Beyond BudsEd Rosenthal
Beyond Buds is a handbook to the future of marijuana. Prohibition’s end has led to a technological revolution that’s generated powerful medicines and products containing almost zero carcinogens and little smoke. Marijuana icon Ed Rosenthal and leading cannabis reporter David Downs guide readers through the best new consumer products, and demonstrate how to make and use the safest, cleanest extracts. Beyond Buds details how award-winning artisans make hash and concentrates, and includes modern techniques utilizing dry ice and CO2. The book is a primer on making kief, water hash, tinctures, topicals, edibles, and other extracts from cannabis leaves, trim, and bud bits, and it goes on to explore and simplify the more exotic and trendy marijuana-infused products, such as butane hash oil (BHO), shatter, wax, and budder. More complex than lighting a joint, these innovative products call for new accessories — special pipes, dabbing tools, and vaporizers — all of which are reviewed and pictured in the book. Beyond Buds expands on Rosenthal’s previous book Ask Ed: Marijuana Gold — Trash to Stash. Completely updated with full-color photographs that are both “how-to” guides and eye candy, this book enables not only the health-conscious toker but also the bottom line–driven cultivator.

Second NatureMichael Pollan
"One of the distinguished gardening books of our time," from the #1 New York Times –bestselling author of The Omnivore's Dilemma ( USA Today ). Chosen by the American Horticultural Society as one of the 75 greatest books ever written about gardening After Michael Pollan bought an old Connecticut dairy farm, he planted a garden and attempted to follow Thoreau's example: do not impose your will upon the wilderness, the woodchucks, or the weeds. That ethic did not, of course, work. But neither did pesticides or firebombing the woodchuck burrow. So Michael Pollan began to think about the troubled borders between nature and contemporary life. The result is a funny, profound, and beautifully written book in the finest tradition of American nature writing. It inspires thoughts on the war of the roses; sex and class conflict in the garden; virtuous composting; the American lawn; seed catalogs, and the politics of planting a tree. A blend of meditation, autobiography, and social history, Second Nature , from the renowned author of The Botany of Desire , In Defense of Food , and other bestsellers, is "as delicious a meditation on one man's relationship with the Earth as any you are likely to come upon" ( The New York Times Book Review ). "Usually when Americans have wanted to explore their relationship to nature they've gone to the wilderness, or the woods. Michael Pollan went to the garden instead . . . and he's returned with a quirky and pleasing book." —Annie Dillard "A joy to read." — Los Angeles Times

CoopMichael Perry
“You can read Michael Perry’s Coop as an outrageously funny comedy about a semi-hapless neophyte navigating the pitfalls (and pratfalls) of the farming life. Please do, in fact. But scratch a little deeper, past Perry’s lusciously entertaining and epigrammatic prose, his ultra-charming combo of Midwestern earnestness and serrated wit, and you’ll find a reflective, sincere, and surprisingly touching-at times, even heart-cracking-story about a man struggling to put down roots.” — Jonathan Miles, author of Want Not In over his head with two pigs, a dozen chickens, and a baby due any minute, the acclaimed author of Population: 485 gives us a humorous, heartfelt memoir of a new life in the country. Living in a ramshackle Wisconsin farmhouse—faced with thirty-seven acres of fallen fences and overgrown fields, and informed by his pregnant wife that she intends to deliver their baby at home—Michael Perry plumbs his unorthodox childhood for clues to how to proceed as a farmer, a husband, and a father. Whether he’s remembering his younger days—when his city-bred parents took in sixty or so foster children while running a sheep and dairy farm—or describing what it’s like to be bitten in the butt while wrestling a pig, Perry flourishes in his trademark humor. But he also writes from the quieter corners of his heart, chronicling experiences as joyful as the birth of his child and as devastating as the death of a dear friend.
