Scent of the Missing - Susannah Charleson Cover Art

Scent of the Missing

Scent of the Missing Love and Partnership with a Search-and-Rescue Dog by Susannah Charleson

A "haunting meditation on trust, hope and love" by a woman who adopts and trains a Golden Retriever puppy to become a search-and-rescue dog ( People ).   In the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing, Susannah Charleson's attention was caught by a newspaper photograph of a canine handler, his exhausted face buried in the fur of his search-and-rescue dog.   Susannah, a dog lover and pilot with search experience herself, was so moved by the image that she decided to volunteer with a local canine team, plunging herself into an astonishing new world. While the team worked long hours for nonexistent pay and often heart-wrenching results, Charleson discovered the joy of working in partnership with a canine friend and the satisfaction of using their combined skills to help her fellow human beings.   Once she qualified to train a dog of her own, Charleson adopted Puzzle—a smart, spirited Golden Retriever puppy who exhibited unique aptitudes as a working dog, but was a bit less interested in the role of compliant house pet.  Scent of the Missing  is the story of Charleson's adventures with Puzzle as they search for a lost teen; an Alzheimer's patient wandering in the cold; and signs of the crew amid the debris of the space shuttle Columbia disaster—all while unraveling the mystery of the bond between humans and dogs.   "A riveting view of both the human animal bond and the training of search and rescue dogs. All dog lovers and people interested in training service dogs should read this book." —Temple Grandin, author of Animals Make Us Human

The Other End of the Leash - Patricia McConnell, Ph.D., Cover Art

The Other End of the Leash

The Other End of the Leash Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D.,

Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language   “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”— The Washington Post   An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them.   After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover:   • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!”   Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

The Owl Who Liked Sitting on Caesar - Martin Windrow Cover Art

The Owl Who Liked Sitting on Caesar

The Owl Who Liked Sitting on Caesar Living with a Tawny Owl by Martin Windrow

This memoir of the relationship between a British military historian and a Tawny Owl is "a small masterpiece of animal literature . . . [a] perfect book" ( The Wall Street Journal ). Mumble was so much a part of my life in those days that the oddity of our relationship seldom occurred to me, and I only thought about it when faced with other people's astonishment. When new acquaintances learned that they were talking to a book editor who shared a seventh-floor flat in a South London tower block with a Tawny Owl, some tended to edge away, rather thoughtfully  . . . I tried to answer patiently, but I found it hard to come up with a short reply to the direct question 'Yes, but  . . . why?'; my best answer was simply 'Why not?' Martin Windrow was a war historian with little experience with pets when he adopted an owl the size of a corncob. Adorable but with knife-sharp talons, Mumble became Windrow's closest, if at times unpredictable, companion, first in a South London flat and later in the more owl-friendly Sussex countryside. In The Owl Who Liked Sitting on Caesar , Windrow recalls with wry humor their finer moments as well as the reactions of incredulous neighbors, the awkwardness of buying Mumble unskinned rabbit at Harrods Food Hall, and the grievous sense of loss when Mumble nearly escapes. Windrow offers a poignant and unforgettable reminiscence of his charmed years with his improbable pet, as well as an unexpected education in the paleontology, zoology, and sociology of owls. "A memoir of his friendship with this singular creature, interwoven with a natural history of her species . . . [It] is all the more affecting because of its gruff understatement." — The New York Times Book Review "Pure joy. Martin Windrow shows us the essence of a wild animal in a story as informative as a scientific paper on the species Strix aluco , but much more fun to read." —Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, author of A Million Years with You Includes photographs and illustrations

Australian Shepherd Training: Dog Training for Your Australian Shepherd Puppy by Claudia Kaiser

Australian Shepherd Training - Dog Training for your Australian Shepherd puppy The training of dogs is often... ... confused with classical dog training drills ... only considered necessary for demanding dogs ... mocked by other dog owners ... replaced by anti-authoritarian methods ... considered too difficult to achieve without experience. What constitutes dog training and what is it good for? And how can you and your Australian Shepherd profit from it without having any experience? The most important thing is to understand how a dog sees his world, what is "normal" for him and how you can use this to your advantage. In addition, the characteristics of each breed are significant when you get beyond the basic training phase. Your Australian Shepherd will show characteristics which are different to those of a Husky, for example, and this is predominantly what you need to consider during training. This book is vol. 1 of the Australian Shepherd training books. Vol. 2 for your grown up Australian Shepherd is also available with the title "Australian Shepherd Training Vol. 2: Dog Training for your grown-up Australian Shepherd" Author Claudia Kaiser says about her book: "It was my desire to let other dog owners profit from the knowledge I have gained over many years, and after making many mistakes. I love my dog and know how important it is to adapt the training to suit each breed. It is exactly this desire that prompted me to write this book. My aim is to help every beginner, not only to understand his dog better, but also to know exactly how to get the best results, step-by-step, so that you can achieve a close, positive and trusting human-dog relationship." Quench your curiosity to know about background information, read reports on other experiences and obtain step-by-step instructions and secret tips which are tailor-made for your Australian Shepherd. Dog Is My Co-Pilot - Bark Editors Cover Art

Dog Is My Co-Pilot

Dog Is My Co-Pilot Great Writers on the World's Oldest Friendship by Bark Editors

Dogs have been our muses, our mentors, and our playful and noble co-pilots. They’ve had a profound influence on us as healers and spiritual guides, and also as co-workers, helping to guide, hunt, herd, search, and rescue. Our bond with dogs is deep and unbreakable, and there’s no better source a reader can turn to for a richer understanding of that complex and wonderful relationship than The Bark . The Bark began as a newsletter in Berkeley, California, that advocated for an off-leash area where dogs could cavort and play. Within a few years it had become a full-fledged, award-winning glossy magazine that published work by some of the best writers in America today. And as it grew, the magazine embraced a much larger canvas: to cover the emerging phenomenon of “dog culture” that has been developing over the past decade, as dogs have moved out of the backyard and into our homes, communities, and, indeed, the very center of our lives. As editor Claudia Kawczynska writes, “The implications of integrating another species into society’s daily fabric go well beyond how we nurture our dogs. It calls for a revamping of the standard etiquette—respecting the concerns and interests of society at large. This new relationship, along with an appreciation for our rich and unbounded future, comprises what we call dog culture. This is what The Bark set out to chronicle.” Dog Is My Co-Pilot is an anthology of essays, short stories, and expert commentaries that explores every aspect of our life with dogs. Fifty percent of the material here has never been published before. The book is divided into four sections: Beginnings explores that first meeting, “the initial murmurings when a dog-human relationship is formed.” Pack investigates the theme of “togetherness” and pays tribute to the dynamic of multiple personalities in the canine-human relationship. Lessons examines what dogs teach us, from love to enlightenment. The final section, Passages, reflects on the themes of true friendship, transformation, and loss. Included are pieces by Lynda Barry, Rick Bass, Maeve Brennan, Margaret Cho, Carolyn Chute, Alice Elliott Dark, Lama Surya Das, Pam Houston, Erica Jong, Tom Junod, Caroline Knapp, Donald McCaig, Nasdijj, Ann Patchett, Michael Paterniti, Charles Siebert, Alexandra Styron, Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, and Alice Walker. In selections that are humorous, poignant, truthful, sometimes surprising, and frequently uplifting, Dog Is My Co-Pilot embraces the full experience of the world’s oldest friendship. For people who love great writing and, yes, great dogs, it’s a book to be both shared and treasured.

Horse Training - Winnie Prandell Cover Art

Horse Training

Horse Training by Winnie Prandell

If you are reading this book, you are either looking to buy a horse or maybe you have already acquired a horse. Either way the will need to be trained. Whether you do it yourself or hire a trainer to train the horse for you. You already know the cost of purchasing a horse can range from about $1000 to $20,000. You may have estimated the cost of feeding, shoeing, and health care to run you about $2,000 per year. That $2,000 per year is if you have property in the country and will keep the horse with you. If you are planning on boarding your horse, then you can expect an additional $2,000 to $3,000 per year. Assuming you are planning on riding your horse an average of 350 hours per year, you will want to include in all those expenses the cost of your health insurance and possible time off from work. Since you are asking yourself, “Why?” I will explain. There are thousands of people each year that receive injuries from horseback riding. Twenty-five percent of those injuries happen to children who are 16 years of age and younger. Many of the head injuries lead to brain injury. The brain injuries can cause serious damages that have a lifelong effect. Unfortunately we are not talking about injuries caused riding rodeos. The majority of these mishaps occur during recreational riding. Eighty percent of the fatal accidents occur at normal horse speeds and are not caused because the horse bucked or reared up. As it turns out you are safer riding a motorcycle than you are on the back of a horse. Researchers tell us that motorcyclists average 7,000 hours of riding time per serious accident, while horseback riders can expect an accident to happen for every 350 hours of riding time. The best method of stopping injury accidents is education. A properly trained horse is less likely to misbehave, and he will be a much safer animal to ride if he has been taught not to behave in a way that will cause a serious injuries. These actions will include biting, kicking, or running away with a rider. A well-trained horse will be much more patient with the odd habits of the untrained person. Riding on the back of an untrained horse is like driving a car that does not have any brakes. You can take them out for a test run, but you may come back dead. Even though the horse’s intentions are good, if he doesn’t have experience, you are riding around with a creature that weighs over a thousand pounds and likes to do whatever he wants. As an investment, horses are more of a liability. The horse has the potential of hurting someone and his resale value is next to nothing. If you have an untrained horse, he can be dangerous. You probably didn’t buy him just to put him out to pasture and get fat and lazy. Just remember training your horse makes your horse more accessible to you as well as being useful and safer to be around. If you don’t seem to have enough time to train a horse, you can hire a trainer. Depending on the training the horse needs, training can take anywhere from two months to a year to be trained. The end results you will have a horse that is well trained. However you will still be untrained unless you are already an experienced rider and just don’t have the time to train your own horse. If you are not an experienced rider, you are not allowed to participate in the training of your horse. This means you will have to find training for yourself. For a whole lot less money than you will pay for a trainer, you can train a horse on your own. You will both be learning at the same time. Of course the horse will not be rideable for a portion of that time, but you will learn some things before you get on the back of that horse. Here are some tips for the novice horseback rider. If this is the first time your have owned a horse, it would be a good idea to pay a professional trainer to help you choose the right horse for you pay out the money for a horse. You will always want to supervise children when they are around horses. Make sure the children are not in the line of fire should the horse decide to kick. If you have children, you will want them to know all about horse safety. When you are looking for a saddle to purchase, make sure to purchase a saddle that has release catches to ensure a fallen rider will not be dragged by the horse because of a foot caught in the stirrups. Make sure you invest in an equestrian helmet that meets the ASTM standards. Do not allow a horse to nibble or “kiss” you, not even a young horse. This can turn into biting and is very hard to stop. Do not wear any loose fitting clothes. It may catch on tack, branches or fences. Never sneak up on a horse from behind.

Healing Power of Horses - Wendy Beth Baker Cover Art

Healing Power of Horses

Healing Power of Horses Lessons from the Lakota Indians by Wendy Beth Baker

Wendy Beth Baker's The Healing Power of Horses is devoted to the world's greatest horsepeople, the Oglala Lakota Indians of Pine Ridge, South Dakota. She begins the book by sharing the philosophy of these great horse-loving people: "There are those who feel the sun rises and sets on the back of a horse, and no matter what obstacles life sets in their way, they never dismount." The spirit and fortitude of the Lakota Indians inform Baker's words as she describes how this once-nomadic tribe came to view the horse as sacred and assigned it great significance in their culture, religion, and lifestyle. The Indians who live on the Pine Ridge Reservation have grown spiritually and as a community through their relationship with their horses, and it is through this connection to the natural world that the power of healing and ultimately, health, flows. With photography by Hope Vinitsky, The Healing Power of Horses tells the individual stories of over a dozen Lakota Indians and how horses have affected each of their lives. Baker was able to interview each of these inspiring individuals for inclusion in this book. The empowering stories told come from Wayne Waters, Marlin "Moon" Weston, Eugenio White Hawk, Wendell Yellow Bull, Aldeen Twiss, Phillip Jumping Eagle and Billy, Dale Vocu, Emma and Shelly Waters, Wilmer Mesteth, Vernell White Thunder, Pat Heathershaw, Lester Waters, and the Carlows. While the stories of each of these exceptional men and women are different, the common denominator in each is the horse's transformative power to heal their minds, spirits, and bodies. These are stories of artists, athletes, and common noble folk, all of whom have struggled to overcome life's many obstacles to thrive and become better people. The author's intention in this book, as she describes in the final section "The Future of the Lakota Horsepeople," is to have her readers gain a better understanding of horses in Lakota culture while at the same time affording some of the Lakota people an opportunity to reconnect with their cultural identity. In reading this book, it is clear that the Lakota people have preserved the emotional power of their ancient culture and strength as a people by maintaining their connection to horses, animals that they deeply love. Fiercely loyal to the United States, the Lakota horsepeople are a strong, proud, and brave community who have much to teach all people about life and the pursuit of healing.

A GUIDE TO LIVING WITH & TRAINING A FEARFUL DOG - Debbie Jacobs Cover Art

A GUIDE TO LIVING WITH & TRAINING A FEARFUL DOG

A GUIDE TO LIVING WITH & TRAINING A FEARFUL DOG by Debbie Jacobs

Debbie Jacobs (CPDT-KA, CAP and finalist in the 2008 Dog Writers Association of America Writing Competition) introduces the most effective and humane ways to help fearful, shy or anxious dogs. A guide to the philosophy and techniques for working with fearful, shy or anxious dogs, the book dispels common myths and misinformation regarding fear based behaviors. It provides, in easy to understand language, the most effective and humane ways to handle dogs with fear based behavior challenges. Very useful information and full of resources for shelters, foster care givers, rescue organizations and veterinarians. While volunteering at the Humane Society of Louisiana's Camp Katrina after the hurricane of 2005, Debbie met Sunny, a border collie mix rescue from a 477 dog hoarding site, She had him transported to her home in Vermont, where he spent the first month cowering in a corner. Thus began the journey of helping Sunny escape from his fears. It was a journey of discovery for Jacobs too. She learned that changing a dog's fear-based behaviors often begins by changing the way we think about the dog. She learned to change her expectations and see Sunny for who he was, not who she thought he should be. And she discovered the most effective and humane ways to help him and other dogs like him. While moving heaven and earth to help Sunny, her extremely fearful dog, Debbie Jacobs became an expert on fearful dogs. A Guide to Living With & Training a Fearful Dog is an excellent book for anyone whose life includes a dog who is afraid. It combines explanations of techniques to use with fearful dogs, information on the many resources available to help them, ad a feeling of hope. Because Jacobs lived it, she understands what it's like to work with a dog who is scared in a way so few people do. Her caring, sharing interest in assisting others who want to help a dog overcome fears comes through in every part of this book, and because she's such an excellent writer, it's a pleasure to read. --Karen B. Miniature Donkey. Miniature Donkey Owners Manual. Miniature Donkey care, environment, health, feeding and breeding. by Harry Holdstone

The Miniature Mediterranean Donkey, also known as the Miniature Donkey or simply the mini, hails originally from the Italian islands of Sardinia and Sicily. They are not just very small donkeys but an entirely separate species. They are the smallest of the equines and increasingly popular as pets. This book will introduce you to these little donkeys by discussing their appearance and biology, typical behaviour, reproduction, their feeding needs, socialisation and bonding, how to train them and what makes these adorable equines such wonderful pets. It will also tell you what you need to know in order to decide whether or not this is the pet for you – cuteness factor aside – and, if it is, where to buy one, how to select your mini, what you need to arrange and buy before you bring it home, and how to take proper care of it. The owner must know what these pint-sized, intelligent and very loving equines need with regards to their environment, feeding and social and mental lives in order to be both healthy and happy. The Miniature Mediterranean Donkey is susceptible to several of the same bacterial, parasitic and viral infections that standard donkeys and horses may contract. Anyone who is serious about owning one needs to know how to care for them, what to look for and how to deal with common conditions. Covered in this book: Care Costs Daily care Do’s and don’ts Feeding Health History Intelligence One or two Personality Tips on buying Training Travelling …and much more

The Book of Pet Love and Loss - Sara Bader Cover Art

The Book of Pet Love and Loss

The Book of Pet Love and Loss Words of Comfort and Wisdom from Remarkable People by Sara Bader

A powerful collection of quotations by writers, leaders, and legends on the pain of losing a pet and overcoming grief. An animal’s love is deep, uncomplicated, unconditional, and forgiving. “Affection without ambivalence” is how Sigmund Freud described the connection. “No matter how awful the day, or how awful I am behaving at any given moment, George doesn’t care,” writes journalist John Dickerson. “He finds me smoldering in my chair and dashes to my lap.” Our lives are intricately intertwined with our pets, and together, over time, we establish rituals that are as steady as a metronome. It’s no wonder the grief is crushing when they depart—even those who’ve had time to prepare describe feeling stunned, devastated, and cracked in two. “We were a bit broken up over the death of our black Persian cat,” crime novelist Raymond Chandler confessed. “When I say a bit broken up, I am being conventional. For us it was a tragedy.” Nobel Prize–winning author V. S. Naipaul described the experience as “calamitous,” and writer May Sarton called it a “volcanic eruption of woe.” Poet Emily Dickinson was so bereft she asked for help: “Carlo died,” she announced in a letter to her friend Thomas Wentworth Higginson in 1866. “Would you instruct me now?” The Book of Pet Love and Loss is a collection of quotations—poignant thoughts and memories discovered in letters, journals, diaries, memoirs, and other original sources—from beloved cultural figures who understood this singular experience so deeply, they felt compelled to write about it. This book dignifies the profound connection we share with our animal companions, but it also provides solace as mourners document their heartache over the loss of their cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, and other animals—even, in the case of Pablo Neruda, a mongoose. Their comforting and wise words are what every animal lover needs on this journey of heartbreak and healing.
